Katie Ledecky gets 3rd win at U.S. swimming championships
[...] the two American swimming stars can start planning their next major project — trying to sweep the world championships.
On a night when Kevin Cordes reclaimed his national record in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke and 32-year-old Matt Grevers regained a spot on the U.S. team, the two 20-year-old women closed out their events at the national championships with a third victory for each and even bigger plans for next month’s worlds in Budapest, Hungary.
Olympic gold medalist Kathleen Baker of Cal broke Cal alum Missy Franklin’s four-year-old championship record in winning the women’s 100 back in 58.57.
Ten months after he saw Cody Miller take Olympic gold in the 100 breaststroke with an American record of 58.87, Cordes retook it, touching in 58.74, with Miller second in 59.11.
After failing to make the Olympic team last year, losing his records to recent Cal graduate Ryan Murphy and questioning whether he has a future in swimming, Grevers won with a time of 52.71.
