Surf forecast issued Thursday 6 January 2022: Seven day outlook for Sydney:

Soo hot, humid, clammy, and uncomfortable ..that it reminds me of landing in Angola in the middle of the night in ’74, the smells of the jungle all around, knowing that a rebel mortar shell could lob on the plane at any moment…

The Noreaster/ East Noreaster has been honking all day and a good part of last night, providing a bit of relief from the humidity and messing up the surf at most places. Places that are really sheltered from the wind had heaps of contenders vying for a wave.

The outlook is for Jungley conditions>> hot, humid, chance of severe T storms etc etc>> to continue for the next coupla days.. But Hey, good news…no jungle smells, or risk of mortar attack likely!

The wind is expected to continue strong from the NorEast, before a windy S change early Sunday will chop the surf up from the other direction, before it blows onshore East, then S/SE, then NE, with the odd light wind period to watch.

Talk about spoilt for variety in mostly choppy conditions…

Stay alert for the odd periods of OK conditions.

All those noreasters are likely to make the water a bit cooler (down to 23-24 now), and the consistent noreast swells have created numerous strong rips for inexperienced or weaker swimmers all along some beaches. Keep an eye out for them and help ’em out if you can.

Friday: similar to today, somewhere around 2 ish metres from the North East, with size at each beach as always dependant on the beach alignment  (the direction it faces relative to the direction the waves arrive from), and the bathymetry (depth of the ocean floor at the beach) including tides.  So, bigger at southern ends of beaches, with rips pushing lots of water back out at various spots along and at north ends of beaches

Saturday: upper end of the 1-2 metre range, more North East, and ditto

Sunday: 1-2 metre range North East, but easing a bit as the southerly wind hits it and chops it up from the other direction

Monday: around 1-1+ metres East

Tuesday:  around 1 ish metres East/South East

Wednesday: somewhere in the 1-2 metre range East

Thursday: ditto.

As long time readers would know, TG’s Surf Forecast has always been so much more than just a surf forecast (Don reminded me the other day, since 1996), aiming to address readers’ requests for additional info, like good fishing spots up/down the coast, info about places, best surf spots. TG’s  answers to which tend to err on the public benefit side, ie pretty vague :).

This week is no exception, with a first for these Covid times:

Could TG provide advice on best comfort stops for families wanting to avoid crowds of potential covid holiday makers going up/coming back from up north?

TG is in fact an expert on such matters, as he likes to refresh in the great outdoors himself. But he can’t posssibly be seen to be publicly endorsing particular Rest Areas.

Pick a spot out in the fresh air, where there’s nice grass, shady trees, somewhere the kids can frolic around, a bit of privacy, and you can’t go wrong!
