Matt Nagy is headed back to the Kansas City Chiefs as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach

Former Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy is headed back to Kansas City and reuniting with Andy Reid.

The Chiefs announced Friday afternoon that they hired Nagy as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach under Reid.

Nagy spent four seasons as the Bears head coach, posting a regular-season record of 34-31 and making two playoff appearances. He was named the NFL’s Coach of the Year following the 2018 season after going 12-4 and winning the NFC North.

But Nagy’s inability to help the Bears build on that success and his struggles in sparking any kind of consistent production from his offense ultimately led to his dismissal.

The Bears on Jan. 10 fired Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace after a 6-11 season.

Pace landed a new job Thursday as a senior personnel executive for the Atlanta Falcons.

Nagy followed Friday by agreeing to return to Kansas City, where he was an assistant under Reid from 2013-17. He will also reunite with Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who spent his rookie season working with Nagy, then the team’s offensive coordinator.

Mahomes made only one start that season. After Nagy’s departure, Mahomes broke through to quickly become a league MVP in 2018 and a Super Bowl champion in February 2020.

Eric Bieniemy remains the Chiefs offensive coordinator. Nagy replaces Mike Kafka, the Northwestern and St. Rita graduate who was named the New York Giants offensive coordinator under new coach Brian Daboll last month.
