Charlie Appleby team dominate at Newmarket as his Guineas squad takes shape as Master Of Seas cut for the Classic

CHARLIE APPLEBY could be triple-handed in the 2000 Guineas next month.

He took Newmarket’s Craven Stakes with Master Of The Seas on Thursday and stablemate La Barrosa was less than a length back in second.

The Royal Blue pair pulled three lengths clear of the rest as the Godolphin team dominated on the Rowley Mile.

Appleby already has One Ruler who is as short as 5-1 for the opening Classic and jockey Will Buick will have two weeks to decide who he rides.

The trainer said: “Master Of The Seas was the class act coming here and I was never disappointed with his run in Meydan, physically he’s done very well since.

“The hood helped him settle and he could keep that for the Guineas.

“It’s a nice position to be in with two or three chances. One Ruler is on course too and we’ve been happy with his preparation.

“It might be quite hard for Will to jump off Master Of The Seas given what he’s achieved there. He’s match-fit and the Craven is a fantastic trial.”

But with three aces to shuffle, Appleby could take La Barrosa to either the Irish or French Guineas.

He added: “We’ve got the options, France might come in to play for La Barrosa. He’s entitled to come on for that, he was a bit gassy today.”

Meanwhile Oxted suffered a shock defeat in the Abernant Stakes as 7-1 chance Summerghand swooped in the Group 3 sprint.

But trainer Roger Teal still reckons he can get his star back on track this summer.

He said: “I’m gutted we didn’t win but we’ll get him back. Every horse gets beat, they are sprinters and you need everything to go right on the day.

“On ratings he should have been two or three lengths clear. He didn’t hit the hill like he did last year but we’re not panicking.”
