4 victims, including police officer, killed in Manhattan mass shooting: NYPD
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday, killing four victims, including an off-duty NYPD officer, according to authorities.
A video showed terrified people running for their lives from the office building at 345 Park Ave. around 7 p.m. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, was seen getting out of his double-parked black BMW while carrying a rifle.
Tamura walked into the building’s lobby and immediately shot and killed 36-year-old Officer Didarul Islam, who worked in the 47th Precinct, according to authorities. The NYPD said Islam was a 3-and-a-half-year veteran of the force who was working private security detail when shots rang out.
Tamura then killed a woman, who took cover behind a pillar before spraying the building’s lobby with gunfire, according to authorities. Blackstone later confirmed the woman, identified as Wesley LePatner, was an executive at the company.
Police said Tamura then killed a security guard who was taking cover behind a desk.
Tamura then shot another man in the lobby, who is expected to survive the shooting and is recovering in the hospital, according to authorities. Police said he then calls the elevator to the lobby and lets a woman exit it before heading to the 33rd floor, which is the offices of Rudin Management.
Tamura shot his gun while walking the floor, killing another person, before walking down the hallway and shooting himself, according to authorities. Police said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Tamura had a note on him that said he had suffered a brain injury from a contact sport and blamed the NFL, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
Tamura’s motive for the shooting is unclear, according to authorities. Police said he had a history of mental health issues and that a rifle case with rounds, a revolver and ammunition were found in his car.
The NFL, which has offices in the building, confirmed that one of its employees was seriously injured in the shooting. Commissioner Roger Goodell said the injured NFL employee was undergoing treatment at a hospital.
He also urged New York NFL employees to work from home or take the day off as the investigation into the mass shooting continues on Tuesday.
