Our Annual Regatta Weekend Resumes

As well as the racing, the Regatta weekend brought us two enjoyable evenings. The latest weekend was very memorable for the evident delight at friends meeting again and the anticipation of racing. It was the Club’s first regatta since May 2019.

The Friday evening supper was attended by one of the highest number of members and guests that we have had. After the race, the Prize Presentation Dinner was held at the RORC Clubhouse. Despite the shortcomings in the service, the dinner was a jolly occasion.

The prizes were presented by Mr Chris Preston, our Guest of Honour. He is the Chair of the RYA and a yachtsman of great experience. He and his yacht took part in the race, entered by Committee Member John Sparshatt-Worley. His speech after the presentations emphasised the changing nature of yachting, including waters getting more crowded, and urged us all to take opportunities to press the case for yachtsmen.

Regatta day had dawned to scant wind and plenty of mist on the Solent. The Race Officer delayed the start. By late morning there was enough wind to hold a start and a hope that the wind would build further. All yachts made a clean start, but in the early afternoon the wind faded almost entirely. The Race Officer announced time was up before anyone crossed the line.

Nevertheless, the Race Officer, Peter Chugg of ISC, had observed the fleet around the first two buoys and declared prize-winners on that basis. The Prize-winners were:
