"Very positive": Man Utd now interested in signing 23yo Sweden star, watched him 10 times
Manchester United are weighing up a summer move for Benfica left-back Samuel Dahl, according to Portuguese publication Record.
The 23-year-old signed for Benfica on a permanent deal from Roma last summer following a successful loan stint during the previous season.
Dahl has developed into a key player under manager Jose Mourinho, and he could be on his way out of Benfica for a bigger challenge soon.
Record claim that United have been delighted by their scouting mission on the young left-back. They have watched him more than 10 times.
The conclusion is ‘very positive’ ahead of a potential summer approach for his services.
Dahl could be signed as Luke Shaw’s deputy
Luke Shaw started the campaign on the left side of the back three under former manager Ruben Amorim.
The Englishman has moved into his conventional left-back position since Amorim’s exit. He has been ever-present in the role under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
Shaw has not had any major injury scares, primarily due to the lack of a consistent workload. United have just the league games to concentrate on, with no other competition.
However, the scenario could be completely different next term. United could have longer Cup runs, while they will have a midweek schedule upon returning to European football.
Shaw’s injury history suggests he could be susceptible to another setback. The club need to manage his workload and may prefer a new acquisition at left-back.
Patrick Dorgu has been vulnerable in the defensive scheme of things. The Dane looks a natural as a winger, and his future could be higher up the pitch for the Red Devils.
Dahl would be an ideal choice to provide depth and quality at left-back. The Swede has completed 87 percent of his passes in the league this term, winning 60 percent of his duels.
He has also recorded 2.7 tackles, 4.5 recoveries and 1.5 clearances per appearance. Dahl is a marauding left-back with immense potential and could be signed as Shaw’s backup.
Benfica recruited Dahl from Roma for £7.84 million, but the latter have a sell-on clause. A package of around £30-35m could be sufficient to persuade Benfica to part ways with him.
