Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario at centre of Italy controversy despite not even playing

The international break has offered a brief distraction for Tottenham Hotspur, but events away from north London have still dragged Guglielmo Vicario into the spotlight.

The final international break of the 25-26 is in full swing, and for Tottenham Hotspur fans, they can at least take their minds off their club’s domestic struggles.

Meanwhile, the Spurs players find themselves in a different environment with something else to fight for.

Some Tottenham stars are currently involved in pre-season friendly games, while others are fighting for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including players from Sweden, Wales and Italy.

Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario involved in Italy video controversy

Thursday night saw Wales lock horns with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it was the Bosnians who came out on top in that qualifying round, booking their spot in the final qualifying game.

Italy had since booked their own slot and were awaiting the result of that encounter to learn who their opponent would be.

Footage from Italian television channel Rai caught Guglielmo Vicario, Italy players and staff appearing to watch the penalty shoot-out between Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the Spurs man’s phone inside a box in the stadium.

When Kerim Alajbegovic scored the winning penalty, Vicario and the staff cheered, with the goalkeeper pumping his fist, as did Italy left-back Federico Dimarco.

The reaction from the Italians has not gone down well with fans from Bosnia, as it appeared Italy were happier with their opponents for the play-off final than a trip to Wales.

Reactions were split, with Italian journalist Guillaume Pacini posting the clip on X, and outlining the divided response.’

His tweet read: “The video making waves in Italy this Friday. With two camps: those who think Rai should not have aired its footage, and those who are going after the players who celebrated the Bosnian team’s final penalty kick. The boomerang effect of this video is immeasurable.”

While one Bosnian social media account, Bosnian Football, also shared the footage to thousands of likes and criticised the reaction: “Look at this disrespect and arrogance by Italy. They were already celebrating after we won penalties. We will take this to account in Zenica!”

The two sides will now face each other for a final spot in the 2026 World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

However, while Vicario still has a chance of making the World Cup, Ben Davies‘ hopes have been dashed following Wales’ elimination.
