The Everton Forum • Re: David Moyes

The bits picked out by others above are purely speculative, backed up by no quotes and there's no ''insiders'' referred to by Matt Hughes (who is formerly Daily Mail and shouldn't be employed by the Guardian, but that's another story for another day). Any sort of basic media literacy tells you that.

When he says ''there is a recognition at Everton that Moyes is at his best working with more experienced players, such as Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who both signed last summer, rather than youngsters like Tyler Dibling, who has made just four Premier League starts since he joined from Southampton''

That's entirely speculative. Saying ''there is a recognition'' is journalistic spin for saying ''I haven't got any sources or quotes for this, so I'm going to couch my own opinion or the generally accepted opinion in the most passive language possible''. ''There is a recognition'' can't be challenged or questioned, because it's so intentionally vague. Any fan could've written that.

The exact same applies to ''any new contract for Moyes is likely to be accompanied by giving the manager a greater say over recruitment, as was the case during his first spell in charge between 2002 and 2013''

According to who, sorry? ''Is likely''? Have you got sources or insiders at the club there, or are you making a speculative logical jump? Are you just saying that a manager given a renewed contract is likely to have more wiggle room at the club than previously? Well of course. It would be weird if that wasn't the case. If you had information that he will be given more control of transfers there, and you were confident in the sources, you would say ''Moyes will be given a greater say over recruitment'' with no room for ambiguity.

If the article was written by Andy Hunter or Paddy Boyland, I'd give those things some credence because they clearly do have sources at the club who are willing to disclose things anonymously, but Matt Hughes is a London based journalist with no connection to Everton. I absolutely believe that he'll be offered a new contract, but the other stuff is just filler and speculation to pad out the article so that it reaches the necessary word count for his editor.
Always enjoy reading another post that lifts the veil of perceived journalistic integrity and exposes it for what it is.
