'You asked for it' - West Ham legend rips into Igor Tudor for 'incomprehensible' decisions
Paolo Di Canio has questioned the logic behind some of the decisions Igor Tudor made during Tottenham’s 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
Even before the Champions League clash, Tudor’s selection decisions and tactics were already coming under major scrutiny.
The big call he made at the Metropolitano Stadium by dropping Guglielmo Vicario for Antonin Kinsky backfired spectacularly early in the game, as Spurs found themselves 3-0 down with 15 minutes played.
Tudor responded by bringing off Kinsky, who was in tears as he made his way straight down the tunnel, with some of his teammates running behind the 22-year-old to console him.
Paolo Di Canio insists Tottenham’s struggles are not down to Guglielmo Vicario
Di Canio labelled Tudor’s decision to drop Vicario as ‘incomprehensible’, admitting he feels sorry for the 29-year-old.
He suggested that the former Empoli man has been hung out to dry this season, given the porous defensive line in front of him.
The West Ham legend said on Sky Italia (as relayed by Corriere dello Sport) about Vicario: “I feel sorry for him, perhaps he’s letting it all slide and doesn’t realise what the tabloids will write tomorrow. They’re mean, they’ll destroy him because when decisions like that are made, they’re incomprehensible.”
“I don’t know if there was any problem with Vicario, and there were probably some clashes in the dressing room, but certainly not because the recent defeats are Vicario’s fault. He made some mistakes, but with a ragtag army up front that’s leaking from all sides.”
Igor Tudor accused of destroying Antonin Kinsky’s career
Di Canio insisted that the Tottenham interim boss was asking for trouble by deciding to start an inexperienced goalkeeper in a crunch tie away at Atletico Madrid.
The pundit suggested that Tudor had destroyed Kinsky’s career with his actions on Tuesday and admitted that he does not expect the Croat to last too much longer in North London.
Di Canio added: “If you put a guy who’s made 17 appearances for Slavia Prague into such a delicate match and say he’s a good player with only six appearances, you asked for it and you destroyed him, even though it’s true that he could have done worse afterwards.
“I often understand that Tudor is very tough, and I don’t know if he’ll pay for it in his career at the highest level. I really don’t think he’ll stay at Tottenham; they’ll go and get an English manager.”
