"Pushing the limits": Club are determined to sign Man Utd "gamechanger" after winter setback
Turkish giants Besiktas are determined to land the signature of Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir during the next transfer window.
The Super Lig outfit came close to signing the 27-year-old this winter. They had a verbal agreement, but the Red Devils pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.
Despite this, Besiktas have not severed contact with the player. The club’s hierarchy will try to finalise his transfer in the summer by ‘pushing the limits’.
Man Utd could pursue a new back-up goalkeeper
United started the current campaign with Bayindir as the first-choice goalkeeper. Andre Onana was loaned out to Trabzonspor after the club recruited Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
Bayindir continued between the sticks for the Red Devils, but he was eventually displaced from his position by Lammens in October after an unconvincing performance against Brentford.
Lammens has since played every minute for United across all competitions. The Belgian has firmly established himself as the number one and has the credentials to sustain the position.
Bayindir, described as a ‘gamechanger‘ by former Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim, may not want to play second fiddle next season. He was prepared to make a financial sacrifice to join Besiktas this winter, but United did not permit his sale.
They are most likely to consider his departure during the summer. Onana could likewise head for the exit door after his loan stint. He has been linked with a surprise return to Inter Milan.
United could pursue a young shot-stopper as Lammens’ deputy. They have been closely monitoring Malmo’s Melker Ellborg. He could emerge as a top target for the backup role.
