FA will review Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s controversial comments after public apology
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to be in big trouble after his recent controversial comments.
The INEOS chief has never shied away from expressing his political views, but his latest remarks sparked widespread outrage after he claimed the UK was being “colonised” by immigrants.
Even the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, intervened and asked the billionaire to apologise for his remarks.
Ratcliffe has now issued a new statement, stating that his intention was to “stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone.”
Here is his full statement (via Sky News): “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.
“My comments were made while answering questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing in the UK.
“My intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone. It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK.”
FA could impose fine on Ratcliffe
The Guardian revealed that the Football Association will look at whether Ratcliffe brought the game into disrepute through his controversial claims.
The FA is set to review his comments before deciding whether any rules have been breached, opening the door to potential disciplinary action.
Britain’s seventh-richest man also cited incorrect figures regarding the population of the country.
Several politicians and fan support groups have since condemned the remarks, increasing the pressure on both Ratcliffe and INEOS.
It now remains to be seen whether the FA will take formal action.
Sticking to football, United head coach Michael Carrick has done a superb job since taking over the reins.
He has shown maturity in handling pressure from media, unlike his predecessor Ruben Amorim.
He could now be placed in an uncomfortable position to answer questions following comments made by the club’s minority shareholders.
United are a global brand. INEOS and their representatives must know that their words matter.
