Harry Maguire sends one-word injury update after Man Utd draw vs West Ham
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has provided a fresh injury update after the 1-1 Premier League draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium.
The Red Devils shared the spoils against the Hammers on the road yesterday. Tomas Soucek broke the deadlock for the hosts, but Benjamin Sesko equalised late in stoppage time.
During the game, Maguire was spotted holding his hamstring after a recovery challenge on Crysencio Summerville in the 34th minute. Despite this, he carried on playing until the 68th minute.
Leny Yoro replaced the Englishman in the right centre-back position and delivered a superb cameo. The Lille graduate won 100% of his tackles and duels. He also blocked two shots on goal.
After the 1-1 draw, Maguire passed through the mixed zone, leaving the London Stadium. When asked about his hamstring, the centre-back said he is ‘alright’, according to reporter Katherine Walsh.
Maguire has been a revelation in the heart of the defence alongside Lisandro Martinez. He has started every game under interim manager Michael Carrick and has barely put a foot wrong.
There were concerns after the 32-year-old was holding his hamstring in the opening half, but he looked comfortable to continue until after the hour mark before Yoro was introduced.
In his post-match press conference, Carrick said United are dealing with a few knocks and niggles. The 12-day gap before the Everton game offers the perfect opportunity to recover effectively.
Meanwhile, Maguire has done everything in his power to earn a new United contract. The centre-back’s deal at the club expires on June 30, but he looks likely to prolong his seven-year stay.
Maguire is on a relatively affordable weekly package of £180,000. The centre-back could be prepared to commit the final years of his career to United by accepting a small paycut on his salary.
The centre-back will want to end the season on a high note. He was watched by England head coach Thomas Tuchel yesterday. He could make a late return to the national set-up before the World Cup.
