Hibs Women 2 Motherwell 0
A goal in each half from Kirsty Morrison and Kathleen McGovern gave the Hibees a comfortable 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Meadowbank Stadium.
Four changes were made to Joelle Murray’s starting XI following last weekend's Sky Sports Cup Semi-Final as Stacey Papadopoulous, Jess Fitzgerald, Hannah Jordan and Morrison replaced Lauren Doran-Barr, Kirsten Reilly, Tegan Bowie and Eilidh Adams.
After a half-chance inside the opening minute for McGovern, the Hibees also had the first true opportunity of the game as Hannah Jordan charged up the left side, slicing past the Motherwell defence, before taking a low shot at goal. As Emma Thomson attempted to eliminate the threat, the ball landed in front of Ciara Grant. Her tap-in hit the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for an alleged handball.
However, minutes later Jordan delivered a smart ball through to Morrison, who coolly rounded the 'Well keeper and finished into an empty net to break the deadlock in the 21st minute.
Morrison opened up a series of opportunities for the Hibees in quick succession. The forward’s floated ball presented Livingstone with a chance to volley the ball past Thomson, but her chance narrowly went wide. Just moments later, Morrison almost grabbed her second with a low shot at goal, but Motherwell's number one kept the ball out.
Motherwell had the first chance of the second half when Carla Boyce ran through the middle of the field and took a powerful shot at goal; however, Noa Schumacher held the ball well.
Just before the hour mark, McGovern fired into the arms of Thomson from a 25-yard free-kick before Jordan fired wide after being knocked off-balance in a one-on-one situation.
The Hibees were hunting for a second goal and in the 63rd minute, the next opportunity presented itself. Livingstone passed a low ball to an awaiting Jordan, who attempted to slot the ball past Thomson, only to see her effort saved. The save couldn’t be replicated moments later as Morrison set up McGovern perfectly, with our number 10 scoring with a signature finish to double the lead at Meadowbank.
Motherwell seeked a reply as Mia McArthur sent an ambitious floated ball into the box, which Rachael Boyle cleared the ball away to the of Lucy Roland - who took a strike at goal but Schumacher made another pivotal save to ensure a clean sheet.
The skipper came close to putting her name on the scoresheet in additional minutes. An excellent ball from Grant set up Boyle to take the last shot of the match, but her attempt narrowly missed the goal, bringing the game to a close.
