Darts Women returned to Princes Park on Sunday, to take on Ashford Town (Middlesex) Women in the league.
They headed into the game full of confidence following an unbeaten run in January and looked to continue the momentum.
The home side began the game brightly and had the first big chance early in the first half. In the 10th minute, a corner from Abbey Davies found Mercedes Bromfield at the back post. The Darts defender headed towards goal, but it went just wide of the Ashford goal.
The Darts went close again midway through the first half, as in the 22nd minute, Darts debutant Lottie Cunningham saw a shot from the edge of the box come rattling back off the bar.
The breakthrough came after the half hour mark as in the 31st minute, Lottie Cunningham sent a fine ball across the box that found Shauni Griffiths. The Darts forward’s shot nestled into the bottom corner to put the home side ahead.
The second goal for the home side came minutes later, as in the 38th minute, Darts defender Mercedes Bromfield, on the half turn, sent an effort on goal beyond the keeper to double the lead for the home side.
The team continued to create chances and made it three in the added time of the first period. In the second minute of added time, the ball fell to Leila Awan on the edge of the box. The Darts forward cut in from the left and fired home to put the team firmly in control at half time.
The home side continued to play on the front foot and went close just after the hour mark.
Mya Lewis-Powell, with a fine run down the right, put in a menacing cross that found Paris Smith in the box. The header from the Darts forward went just past the post.
Darts continued to create chances as the half went on but had to wait till the 80th minute for goal number four. A well worked move down the left from the home side resulted in Georgie Davis crossing to find Molly Smith in the box. The Darts forward’s shot flew past the keeper and into the far corner to seal all three points for the Darts.
