£47m Man Utd star wants to join Inter Milan, representatives in talks - report
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could make a surprise return to Inter Milan at the end of the season, according to The Daily Mail.
The 29-year-old joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from the Red Devils last summer following the arrival of Royal Antwerp shot-stopper Senne Lammens.
Altay Bayindir was preferred over Onana at the beginning of the campaign, and Lammens has since become the undisputed choice between the sticks.
Onana has not given up on reviving his United career, but The Daily Mail claim that he is expected to leave the club on a permanent basis this summer.
Talks are underway with his former club Inter, who consider him as a replacement for Yann Sommer.
Onana is currently on £120,000 per week at United, and it is claimed that his salary could prove a stumbling block for the Nerazzurri to purchase him.
United may have to pay him off to accept a salary reduction at the San Siro giants.
Red Devils may seek to recoup part of Onana’s fee
Onana signed for the Red Devils from the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2023 for £47 million.
The Cameroonian came with a big reputation as a ball-playing goalkeeper, but his suspect shot-stopping proved his downfall under former head coach Ruben Amorim.
Michael Carrick is currently in interim charge following Amorim’s sacking. A permanent manager will be announced in the summer, who will make his own choices.
However, it seems unlikely that Onana will revive his United career, particularly with the instant success of Lammens, who has hardly put a foot wrong in the club’s shirt.
Hence, United’s prime focus will be on cashing in on Onana. The hierarchy will hope to recoup at least 50 percent of the £47m sum paid to recruit him from Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri could be willing to make such an outlay on the shot-stopper, who was hugely successful in his only season with them, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana.
He was also instrumental in the club making the 2023 Champions League final. Hence, we won’t be surprised if the San Siro heavyweights make a formal offer for his services.
A deal may ultimately depend on Onana’s wages being reduced, either voluntarily or with a payoff.
