6 Chances created, 8 recoveries: Carrick praises flawless Man Utd star after stunning display vs Man City
Manchester United registered a thumping 2-0 Premier League win over Manchester City at Old Trafford today.
Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead before Patrick Dorgu scored again for the Red Devils.
The game could have ended 7–0 if not for three disallowed goals due to offside calls and the woodwork saving City twice.
It was the first time Michael Carrick took charge of the Red Devils, having been appointed as the club’s new head coach earlier this week.
While several United players impressed, club captain Bruno Fernandes received special praise from Carrick after the game.
The caretaker head coach said (via ManUtd.com): “I thought again he (Bruno) was fantastic today. The way he played the position, he’s so clever and he takes up spaces.
“He had a big discipline role, him and Bryan [Mbeumo] too defensively as well to protect the team from anything coming through the middle as much as possible.
“It wasn’t all kind of playing and positivity to that point but he’s just got so much quality. He can adapt and playing in that position he’s a real threat and he made the difference.”
Fernandes truly ran the show
The Portuguese magnifico received a perfect 10 in our player ratings.
He created six chances and completed 75% of his crosses.
Defensively, he made eight recoveries and four crucial tackles.
Carrick deployed a 4-2-3-1 system, which often morphed into a 4-4-2 formation.
Fernandes was the heartbeat of the side, pulling the strings in midfield and creating several opportunities.
He could have earned an assist early in the game when he delivered a pinpoint corner to Harry Maguire at the far post.
Maguire could only manage to hit the woodwork.
He floated a David Beckham-esque cross from the right flank for Mbeumo, who left it for Dorgu to fire a shot from an acute angle.
He finally got his much-deserved assist when he drove his side forward on the counter-attack for Mbeumo’s goal.
