Who is Conor Gallagher? Tottenham midfielder’s career stats, salary, trophies and more
After Tottenham added Conor Gallagher to their squad, you may be wanting to know more about the former Chelsea midfielder.
Tottenham were in need of midfield reinforcements in the January window of 2026 and moved quickly to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Conor Gallagher.
We all know a lot about Gallagher already thanks to his time at Chelsea and his career with England, but there’s so much more to dive into.
So, here’s everything you need to know about Tottenham’s new number 22.
Conor Gallagher joined Tottenham in January 2026
Spurs had been looking at Gallagher for years before he actually joined the club. They wanted him when he decided to join Atletico Madrid instead, and came back for him a couple of years later.
Aston Villa were pushing to get a deal done at the time, but Spurs won the race for Gallagher. It cost them £35m, but that’s far from the biggest deals Tottenham have done in the transfer market.
It’s now thought Gallagher is one of the top earners at Spurs. He was on £150,000 per week at Atletico Madrid so it’s safe to assume Gallagher’s salary will be similar, if not higher at Tottenham.
Career leading to Spurs move
It’s no secret that Conor Gallagher was a product of the Chelsea academy. Indeed, Chelsea fans are unhappy with Gallagher for crossing that London divide, even if he did spend some time in Spain before joining Spurs.
During his time at Chelsea, Gallagher made 95 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring ten goals and registering ten assists. He also captained the team on numerous occasions during his final season at Stamford Bridge.
He’s had loan spells at a number of clubs through his career, too. Gallagher spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign with Charlton Athletic before joining Swansea on loan in January 2020.
Another loan move to West Brom in 2020/21 followed, but it was the stint with Crystal Palace in 2021/22 that really put Gallagher on the map. He scored eight goals and added five assists in 39 appearances for the Eagles.
Gallagher signed for Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024. Despite a strong start there where he endeared himself to the Spanish fans, Gallagher fell out of favour over time. Still, he turned out 77 times for Atletico, scoring seven goals and registering seven assists.
Conor Gallagher’s strengths and weaknesses
We’ve already had a look at Conor Gallagher’s stats when he joined Spurs, and they make for interesting reading. In short, he’s great at contributing in attacking areas, proving himself to be an effective creative midfielder. However, he ranks surprisingly low for defensive work and pass success.
Gallagher’s best position is arguably as a number eight, where he is able to track back and use his combative style to protect the defence, while also having some freedom to roam forward. He’s often at his best when he’s bursting into the box to get on the end of moves.
He’s a highly athletic player with a great engine, and he’s certainly the kind of player who wears his heart on his sleeve and gives everything for his team.
However, as we stated above, his tackling can often be his downfall. Gallagher has a tendancy to be overzealous and has faced disciplinary issues in the past.
He also struggles with longer-range passing and crosses, with a low completion rate in both areas.
He’s not actually won that many trophies
Despite being at Chelsea for so long, Gallagher has actually not got that much silverware to his name. In fact, the only major trophy he’s won is the Europa League, which he lifted in 2019.
Aside from that, at club level, he’s won the English FA Youth Cup twice and English Youth League with Chelsea Under-18s.
Gallagher was also part of the World Cup-winning squad for England U-17s back in 2017.
Gallagher’s England career has stalled
Speaking of the international stage, Gallagher has been capped 22 times by England. However, his last appearance for the Three Lions came in the summer of 2025, in a friendly defeat against Senegal.
Gallagher’s last competitve appearance for England came in November 2024 and he’s not been included in Thomas Tuchel’s last three squads.
It would take some effort for him to break into the fold and make the World Cup squad for 2026 now. But, Gallagher has represented England at Euro 2024.
