Tottenham know when Pape Sarr will return from AFCON but it is bittersweet news

0 1

Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr will have an opportunity to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy on Sunday.

While Yves Bissouma’s Mali were eliminated from the AFCON at the quarterfinal stage, Sarr’s Senegal have made it to the showpiece end of the tournament.

The West African nation beat Egypt in the semifinal on Wednesday to book their spot in the final on Sunday.

It is not the result Thomas Frank would have wanted, as it means he will have to make do without Sarr for one more game: the London derby against West Ham United on Saturday.

A bittersweet AFCON for Tottenham’s Pape Sarr

The Spurs midfielder will be over the moon to have a chance to win another major trophy, just seven months after lifting the Europa League in Bilbao.

However, Sarr was once again an unused substitute in the semi-final against Egypt, as he has been for all but one of Senegal’s games this tournament.

Pape Thiaw’s men will play tournament hosts Morocco in the big final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday.

Going by what we have seen in the tournament so far, the Spurs man is likely to be restricted to cheering on his teammates from the bench, barring any injuries in Senegal’s midfield.

Why Sarr not playing is good news for Spurs

It is certainly not ideal for Tottenham that Senegal made it all the way to the final and Sarr stayed in Morocco for the entire duration of the tournament.

However, Frank will be pleased that the 23-year-old has barely accumulated any fatigue over the last month and has had some much-needed rest.

Sarr will be hungry to be get on the pitch and raring to go when he returns to Tottenham next week.
