Bruins’ Marco Sturm Praises Jonathan Aspirot After Extension
Boston Bruins head coach Marco Sturm has nothing but positive things to say about defenseman Jonathan Aspirot.
The Bruins signed Aspirot on Sunday to a two-year NHL contract extension through the 2027-28 season with an annual cap hit of $887,500. Following the extension being made, Sturm heaped praise on the undrafted defenseman.
“He took advantage of the opportunity and also the opportunity for a new coach coming in,” Sturm said on Sunday when asked of Aspirot’s development, via Boston.com.
“The system we play, I think it just fit him perfectly. … He’s become a pleasant surprise for this hockey team. We know it. The players know it.”
Aspirot spent the last six years in the AHL and finally got his chance to make his NHL debut this season with the Bruins. Since making his NHL debut, Aspirot has been a key part of Boston’s defense as he isn’t afraid to put his body on the line.
“I think he’s a guy who’s better without the puck because he closes, and he can skate and keeps things simple, blocks a lot of shots,” Sturm said. “So he does all those things we kind of were looking for. He’s quick enough and strong enough. That you can’t teach.”
The 26-year-old Quebec native has been playing alongside Charlie McAvoy, who’s also been impressed with Aspirot’s play, given this is his first time playing in the NHL.
“He’s been awesome,” McAvoy said. “He’s been such a story. Just a great guy. I’ve been enjoying playing with him. Before I got to play with him, I enjoyed watching him come in. He was really starting to take strides when I was out. I’m just so proud of him.”
Aspirot has skated in 26 games, recording two goals and one assist.
