After Solskjaer & Carrick: Man Utd are now considering 49yo for interim manager role

0 0

Manchester United parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim following a 1-1 Premier League draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Red Devils have placed Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher in charge for Wednesday’s league game at Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

However, they could confirm an interim manager thereafter, and ESPN claim that ‘early-stage informal talks’ have been held with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick regarding the position.

Alongside the duo, Ruud van Nistelrooy is under consideration after a successful interim stint prior to Amorim’s appointment. Former United captain Wayne Rooney has not been approached.

Solskjaer or Van Nistelrooy could take charge of United

Solksjaer was dismissed from the helm in November 2021 after a heavy 4-1 league defeat to Watford.

The Norwegian has since had a stint with Besiktas in the Turkish top-flight, where he was sacked in August last year. He is a free agent and appears open to taking temporary control of United.

United were lauded for their attacking football under Solskjaer during the early phase, and the club’s hierarchy obviously feel he could provide a huge lift during the backend of the campaign.

Carrick has also been spoken with, but we don’t believe he would accept the role. He was disappointed after Solskjaer’s exit in 2021 and did not want to be part of the coaching staff under Ralf Rangnick.

He is someone who is quite vocal and may not suit the Red Devils’ hierarchy.

Van Nistelrooy, on the other hand, could be another candidate. He had a 75 percent win rate in his previous four-game spell, but parted ways once Amorim arrived with his staff in November 2024.

The 49-year-old has admitted that he wants to become United’s permanent manager one day, and could be tempted to accept the vacancy to prove his credentials and secure the job for the long term.
