‘Shocked’: What Wilcox told Man United players following brutal Amorim sack now revealed

Manchester United pulled the trigger on manager Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.

The timing stunned many, with a widespread belief that Amorim would at least be given until the end of the season to steady a turbulent campaign.

Man United’s chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox told the Portuguese coach that his time at the club was over.

According to The Athletic, the duo then called a meeting with the players where Wilcox informed them that the “last two days had really shocked him.”

The 54-year-old insisted that the club had backed Amorim with the resources and authority he requested, but the manager had made his desire for an exit unmistakably clear.

He added that “Amorim had changed and United had to act.”

The Portuguese head coach endured a miserable 14-month spell at United.

His unwavering commitment to a 3-4-3 system became a growing issue, particularly as the squad lacked the personnel to execute it effectively.

By the time he departed, Amorim had recorded a win rate of just 40 percent, the lowest of any United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

While results had long been underwhelming, it was Amorim’s explosive public criticism of the board on Sunday that finally sealed his fate.

The 40-year-old said in his press conference that every executive must do their job.

He even referenced Gary Neville by name, hinting that United’s decision-makers were being influenced by external noise.

With Amorim gone, club legend Darren Fletcher has been thrust into the spotlight and will take charge of the upcoming clashes against Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion.
