Red Sox Showing Interest In Trade For $8 Million All-Star Pitcher
The Boston Red Sox have made some aggressive moves this offseason, but they may not be done.
In terms of starting pitchers, the Red Sox have added Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo already. However, there are still some elite arms available, and the trade market features an ace playing on an $8 million club option.
Freddy Peralta is a year away from free agency, which is when the Milwaukee Brewers have historically dealt away star pitchers. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, the Brewers are still open to trading him, and the Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest.
“The Freddy Peralta talks are about to resume in earnest,” wrote The Athletic on Monday. “Both New York clubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest. Some low-revenue clubs that can absorb Peralta’s $8 million salary are in play as well.”
The competition to land him is stiff, and the Brewers’ demands may be steep. The Brewers went to the National League Championship Series last season and are essentially running it back with the same team next season. They feel Peralta helps them contend for a World Series, so getting them to deal him will require a substantial offer.
The Red Sox have Garrett Crochet, Gray and Brayan Bello slated to lead their rotation. However, Peralta is an ace and would slot in right behind Crochet. He was named an All-Star for the second time last season.
He notched his third consecutive season with at least 200 strikeouts and is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He will not be cheap in terms of what the Red Sox would have to give up, especially given he only has one year of control right now, but he could help make them one of the favorites in the American League East.
