Amorim: I know what Leeds game means to our fans
Manchester United take on Leeds United this weekend at a time when our form and results are contrasting. While Leeds are struggling at the bottom of the table, in recent weeks they’ve drawn against Liverpool twice, beaten Chelsea 3-1 and thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1. Our last game saw us fail to beat statistically the worst Premier League team of all time, Wolves, at home.
Since rejoining the top flight in 2020, Leeds have picked up some rotten results against United and haven’t beaten us yet. We thrashed them 6-2 in their first season up, 5-1 and 4-2 in their second season, and our last trip to Elland Road saw us win 2-0 with goals in the final 10 minutes.
Speaking to the press ahead of the game, manager Ruben Amorim discusses what games like this mean to the fans.
I heard it is a big derby and a great environment. A big rival. Every game in the Premier League is tough for us. I know that it means so much to the fans but we need to go there and try to win.
I never experienced this one unfortunately, the rivalry here, it’s the same but just with different environments and a different culture. But the noise is going to be big. We just have to perform. It’s hard to compare different cultures, different bodies, a different history. Let’s just focus on the game that is 11 guys against 11 in the beginning and we will try to win.
They have a lot of pace and, sometimes, we struggle with pace. They are confident, but we have proved we can win any game in any situation, in every context. So we will try to do that again. We know that they change the system. They have different players in [the] front. They can as, the last game, they rotated two players that usually are the starters. So they have good players, good manager, great environment. It is going to be a tough game.
