Drake Maye Gives Updated Take On NFL MVP Candidacy
The New England Patriots will take the field for perhaps their most important matchup of the 2025 season in Week 16 when they square off against the Baltimore Ravens. As has been the case throughout the year, quarterback Drake Maye will play a big role in determining just how successful the Pats are in this game.
In his first full season as New England’s starting quarterback, Maye has turned himself into a de facto superstar. Through 14 games, Maye has thrown for 3,567 yards and 23 touchdowns, while also rushing for 362 yards and four more scores.
As a result of his strong play, Maye has emerged as one of the frontrunners in the MVP conversation. While Maye admitted it’s an honor to be mentioned in that discussion, he’s more concerned with finding a way to help the Patriots win a Super Bowl.
“The MVP is obviously one of the big accolades for this league,” Maye said on Friday. “It’s an honor as a player to earn the award, and I respect all the past MVPs, but I think at the end of the day, winning a Super Bowl is the biggest thing.
That’s what you work towards, and that’s what this game’s about. I love winning, and the personal accolades come with all that, but I’d rather win (the Super Bowl) than win personal awards. People in that locker room, I know a lot of them feel the same way.”
Maye’s rough outing against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 (14/23, 155 YDS, 1 INT, 4 CAR, 43 YDS, 2 TD) may have ruined his MVP candidacy, but he’s still only 23 years old. Assuming he can continue to develop, Maye may not even be close to reaching the peak of his powers.
At the end of the day, though, Maye’s individual performance plays a big role in determining whether or not New England is winning games. As a result, the team will be hoping he can put together a bounce-back outing on Sunday against Baltimore.
