Exit-linked youngster shines as Obi starts in Man United U21 2-0 win over Dortmund
Manchester United U21s beat Borussia Dortmund II 2-0 in the Premier League International Cup at Old Trafford on Friday evening.
Chido Obi made his first start since his return from injury, while Sekou got his second consecutive start.
Cardiff-linked striker Gabriele Biancheri stole the show, scoring a brace to help United record their second victory in the competition.
Dortmund dominated possession early on, but failed to test Will Murdock in the United goal.
United opened the scoring in the seventh minute, with Diego Leon picking out Obi, who fed Biancheri, and the Welsh forward fired a low drive into the far corner.
Shortly after, Dortmund missed a chance to draw level through Jonas Feddersen, whose header was kept out by Murdock.
United ended the first half strongly as they pushed for a second goal. Obi saw an effort fly over the bar after combining with Kone, before James Scanlon’s effort was parried away by goalkeeper Silas Ostrzinski.
The second half began with little attacking intent from either side until Danylo Krevsun’s free-kick rattled the crossbar.
Murdock’s first action after the break was decisive, making a crucial save to deny Charalampos Drakas — who had raced through — from levelling the scores.
Relief finally came for United in the 70th minute, as Biancheri made it 2-0.
The 19-year-old peeled away to the left flank to receive a pass from Scanlon before smashing an unstoppable shot past the goalkeeper.
Biancheri’s strike did not break Dortmund’s spirit as the German side pushed to get back into the tie, with Murdock denying Krevsun.
Biancheri had two more chances to add to his tally but Ostrzinski kept him out on both occasions.
The victory sees United climb to second in Group D, sitting just one point behind leaders Sunderland.
Man United U21s are back in action in the Premier League International Cup in January against Sporting CP in their last group game.
