Can Manchester United replace Bruno Fernandes?

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League when he claimed the club wanted him gone last summer.

The Portuguese midfield maestro was a key target for Saudi Pro League (SPL) club Al Hilal. According to reports, the SPL giants were willing to table a formal bid worth up to £100 million to lure Fernandes to the Middle East.

High-profile transfer sagas like this often fuel intense debate among fans and pundits alike, while also driving interest in football betting markets as speculation gathers pace and odds fluctuate. That said, it’s important to approach football betting with balance and awareness.

Practising responsible gambling on online casinos and sports betting platforms means setting limits, avoiding impulsive decisions driven by rumours, and remembering that transfer negotiations and performances are never guaranteed.

United were tempted by the fee, but Fernandes claims he shut down the move that promised a mammoth pay rise for family reasons and his love for the club. While Fernandes decided to stick with the Red Devils, there’s a feeling that this transfer saga is far from over.

By January, Fernandes will have one year left on his contract, so United may be tempted to cash in again this summer, especially if the Saudis are still interested.

If that happens, we’ve highlighted four players United could sign to replace Fernandes either in the January market or next summer.

Angelo Stiller – VfB Stuttgart

United have had their eye on Angelo Stiller for a while. The 24-year-old has been a consistent performer for VfB Stuttgart over the past few years.

His performances have also drawn interest from Real Madrid, but Stuttgart have managed to hang on to their midfield maestro.

Stiller’s contract with Stuttgart runs until the summer of 2028, so they won’t be pressured into a sale unless a tempting proposal arrives.

The German midfielder has been in fine form this season, notching one goal and six assists. He has also created five big chances in the Bundesliga and averages 1.9 key passes per 90 minutes.

Adam Wharton – Crystal Palace

Adam Wharton has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League, and there are reports that even Madrid are keeping an eye on the Englishman.

Crystal Palace have lost key players like Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, but they’ve been reluctant to part ways with Wharton, who has also been linked with Manchester City and Chelsea.

The 21-year-old is tied to Palace until 2029, so the Eagles have an incentive to drive a hard bargain.

While they will demand a premium fee for Wharton, the midfielder has proven to be worth every penny.

Aside from being an accomplished ball-winner, Wharton embodies the ideal deep-lying playmaker with an eye for line-breaking passes.

He’d be an ideal replacement for Fernandes if the Portuguese leaves for Saudi Arabia in the summer.

Elliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest

Like Wharton, Elliot Anderson is also on the radar of several top Premier League teams, including United.

He has been a value for money signing for Forest since joining from Newcastle United and is now valued at £100m by the Tricky Trees.

Forest see him as a huge part of their long-term strategy, but United could throw a wrench in their plans if they formalise their interest with a bid.

Anderson may cost a premium fee, but he’s the kind of midfielder who can take United’s level up a notch.

The England international is comfortable playing in multiple midfield roles and would be a like-for-like replacement for Fernandes.

Morten Hjulmand – Sporting CP

Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand is another option for United, although he’ll be a more defensive-minded addition to the squad.

Amorim is familiar with the 26-year-old, having worked with him at Sporting, but Manuel Ugarte is proof that such reunions don’t always work out.

Nevertheless, Hjulmand could be a decent signing for United.

The Danish midfielder has four goal contributions in 13 league games for Sporting this season, but his numbers behind the ball are far more impressive.

Hjulmand averages nearly two tackles per match, 6.5 ball recoveries per 90 minutes and has won 64% of his ground duels.

He’s also imperious in the air, winning a remarkable 83% of his aerial battles. Hjulmand will be a cost-effective signing, but whether he can adapt to Premier League football is a different question.
