Cam Newton Says He Felt Disrespected By Phillip Rivers’ Celebrated Return
Cam Newton is a footnote in the New England Patriots’ 65-year existence.
The former NFL MVP played 15 games at quarterback for New England in 2020, throwing eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Patriots.
He led the team to a 7-9 record in what would be his final full season as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Although he has not yet officially retired, Newton has made a name for himself as a member of ESPN’s “First Take” panel since his last game action for the Carolina Panthers in 2021.
At the age of 36 years old, Newton took to his own “4th&1 With Cam Newton” podcast to say that the Indianapolis Colts’ signing of 44-year-old retired quarterback Phillip Rivers was a “slap in my face.”
“It’s almost like a slap in my face, bro,” Newton said. “I did not, and will not (retire), because of an opportunity like this!”
When his cohost brought up the fact that Rivers has experience in head coach Shane Steichen’s system, Newton was unmoved.
“I don’t give a damn if he was in his family!” Newton said. “He’s 44 years old, bro!”
Newton went on to state his belief that he is being held to a different standard than other inactive quarterbacks.
Although he did show love to Rivers, Newton said that NFL teams are “bending the rules for certain people.”
“I know when it comes to me… It’s the personality, bro. Folks don’t want a Shedeur (Sanders) situation,” Newton said. “They don’t want a circus.”
