Red Sox Reportedly Acquire Three-Time All-Star Sonny Gray

The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a deal to acquire right-hander Sonny Gray in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman was first to report the news. ESPN’s Jeff Passan confirmed the report and shared some pertinent details — as right-hander Richard Fitts and left-hander Brandon Clarke will head to St. Louis.

Gray, 36, has been one of the more consistent starting pitchers in all of baseball throughout his career, compiling a 3.58 ERA across 330 starts during stints with the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins and Cardinals.

Gray has experienced something of a career renaissance over the last several seasons — which included a second-place finish in American League Cy Young award voting in 2023 — and will waive his no-trade clause in order to execute the deal.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the contract is being reworked to reflect that of a one-year deal, plus a mutual option — with his base salary coming in at $31 million, and the mutual option buyout costing $5 million.

Gray, in that case, is essentially getting $36 million for one year of work in 2026 — though the club reportedly is receiving $20 million to help cover those expenses, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

The Red So’s payroll currently sits at roughly $225 million, and are on the hook for $21 million with Gray, keeping them around $15 million under the competitive tax threshold.
