Aston Villa player ratings as England forward leads the way to comeback win at Leeds United

0 2

The latest fan-voted Aston Villa player ratings are in after Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League victory against Leeds United at Elland Road.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Villa v Bournemouth player ratings

Emiliano Martínez – 6.8

Villa’s goalkeeper either distracted himself trying to buy a foul or got bullied for the Leeds goal. Either way, it was a bad mistake the preceded an otherwise typically solid performance.

Matty Cash – 7.0

Cash was primarily concerned with defending for large periods of the game and did so with aplomb. He did manage to get involved going forward too, shooting just wide in the first half and whipping in a cross that Ollie Watkins should have done better with.

Ezri Konsa – 7.3

This was a pretty typical Konsa performance, largely devoid of dramatic moments because he’s in tremendous form and most things are just easy for him. One important block early in the second half caught the eye. Not literally.

Pau Torres – 6.8

There will be games this season for which Torres is a poor fit and I personally thought this was one of them. He demonstrated his long passing ability but was also outpaced with alarming ease by Lukas Nmecha. I do think he dealt with this challenge better than he might have last season.

Lucas Digne – 6.0

Substituted at half time after a fine defensive contribution but no effect on the game in an attacking sense. Digne wasn’t off his game, just a victim of Unai Emery having the right option on the bench.

Boubacar Kamara – 7.3

Kamara wasn’t amazing by any stretch. Most of his performances are good almost automatically at this point but I thought he was a little casual on the ball in the first half.

Youri Tielemans – 6.5

It wasn’t an elite Tielemans performance but it was a quite good one – in fairness, it wasn’t really the right platform for midfielders. He embraced the battle like he’d never been away and got better as the game progressed.

John McGinn – 7.0

I scored McGinn a 6 out of 10 but having seen the reaction of Leeds fans after the game I’m upgrading him to a 15.

Emi Buendía – 5.8

The second Villa player to be substituted at half time. He worked hard and put himself about but wasn’t able to maintain possession to his usual standard. Not awful, not bad, and ultimately a positive change from the boss.

Morgan Rogers – 9.0 – MOTM

With one delicate finish from close range and one phenomenal free kick, Rogers won Villa the match. His overall performance would have scored well in its own right but an awful blind pass between his goals could have led to disaster.

Ollie Watkins – 5.75

It was another disappointing display from Villa’s beloved record Premier League goalscorer. We need more from Watkins and we need it soon.

Substitutes

Ian Maatsen – 6.8

Other than tacking back to thwart Brenden Aaronson, I can’t put my finger on anything specific Maatsen did after coming on at half time. All I know is Villa looked a better balanced team with him than without him.

Donyell Malen – 7.8

Malen’s immediate impact, incision and directness changed the game. He’s not the answer at number 9 but every time he does stuff like this, I really wish he was.

Jadon Sancho – 5.8

Sancho flattered to deceive but, as usual, his best moments came when he was able to link up with former Borussia Dortmund buddy Maatsen on the left.

Ross Barkley – 6.8

Villa’s midfield closer came on with a whisker over 20 minutes left and did a handful of very useful things in the middle of the park.

Lamare Bogarde – 6.5

Came on with six minutes left. Played 12. Baffling.
