Former Celtics Guard Receives $5 Million Update In Illegal Gambling Case
The Boston Celtics appear to be rounding into form, as they have won four of their past five games to push their record to 9-8 on the season. Across the league, several of their former players have continued to draw attention for their alleged involvement in an illegal gambling case.
One of those former players is current Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. While he didn’t spend long with the Celtics, Billups initially began his career with the team after being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft.
Billups has been accused of being involved in an illegal gambling scheme, and he faces charges of wire fraud and money laundering. At his arraignment on Monday morning, Billups pleaded not guilty to both charges, and it was revealed that a judge set his bail at an eye-popping $5 million.
“The judge has set bail for Chauncey Billups at $5 million. Billups used his house in Colorado as collateral. His wife and daughter co-signed the bond,” Ramona Shelburne of ESPN shared in a post on X.
Other former C’s players involved in this case are Terry Rozier and Damon Jones, although they have yet to be arraigned like Billups was on Monday. The good news, at least from a Boston perspective, is that the team has not been questioned as part of this case, as it appears the alleged incidents did not take place during these guys’ time with the team.
While this story will continue to hover over the 2025-26 campaign, the Celtics will continue focusing on finding ways to win basketball. Their next challenge will come against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.
