Craig Breslow Leaves Door Open For Red Sox To Sign Multiple Big Bats

The general manager meetings in Las Vegas are underway, and the groundwork for teams to make big moves is being laid. Craig Breslow has already talked about the Boston Red Sox potentially adding some power bats, but how many?

The Red Sox hit the 15th most home runs in baseball on the season, but hit the third-fewest in the final two months of the regular season. The Red Sox could be looking for big bats, and Craig Breslow left the door open to sign more than just one.

“We could,” Breslow said on Wednesday when asked if the team could sign multiple bats, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “I think we’re going to be open to every conceivable path to improving the team. Specifically what that looks like or who the names are that fill those roles, I think we’ll see how the offseason plays out.”

If the Red Sox want to add power, this is the offseason to do so. Kyle Schwarber, Eugenio Suárez and Pete Alonso are all free agents. Considering the Red Sox may prioritize bringing Alex Bregman back, adding one of those three would make for a very expensive offseason.

Breslow acknowledged the team’s power drought at times, but he also noted he thinks the players the team has are capable of more than they showed last season.

“We didn’t slug nearly as much as I think we can or we will and will pursue opportunities to improve that,” Breslow said on Monday, per Smith. “Free agency is one of them, trades are another. We lost Roman (Anthony), we lost (Wilyer Abreu) for significant stretches. And those are two guys who can hit the ball out of the park consistently.”

Teams that hit home runs usually have success in October. That’s not to say it’s an absolute, but great home run-hitting teams find ways to change games in a hurry in the postseason. It’s harder to string together hits when managers are being more careful and the team is throwing their best arms.
