Milan and Inter acquire San Siro: why the timing was crucial

Milan and Inter have confirmed the acquisition of San Siro, and the timing was essential in the deal, given that, on November 10, the Stadio Meazza would have become a monument of historic importance if it were still publicly owned.

Inter and Milan confirmed the acquisition of the Stadio Meazza and its surrounding areas with an official statement on Wednesday.

Milan and Inter had to acquire San Siro before November 10

The Milan City Council had approved the sale to the Milanese clubs in September, and Milan and Inter have now become the formal owners of the San Siro area.

It is no coincidence that all the documents were signed before November 10 because, as previously reported, on that date the stadium would have been recognised as a monument of historic importance under Italian law, if it were still publicly owned.

If this had happened, then Milan and Inter would have found it much more difficult to demolish the iconic stadium as part of the project for their new arena.

When will the Stadio Meazza be demolished?

Milan and Inter’s new stadium will be built near the Meazza and not in place of it, but most of the Meazza will be demolished after 2031.

A report by Alessandra Oppino and Giacomo Morri, professors at the Politecnico and Bocconi Universities, showed that over 90% of the Stadio Meazza, including the towers, the first and third tiers, will be wrecked.
