'Promise': Man United coach delivers glowing update on 18yo star turning heads at Carrington

0 7

Manchester United defender Diego Leon is set to complete his first full 90 minutes since joining the club earlier this summer.

Leon moved to Man United from Cerro Porteno for an initial fee of £3.2 million, which could rise to £7m with add-ons.

The 18-year-old Paraguayan has made three appearances for the Under-21s, gradually settling into English football, but is still awaiting his senior debut.

United Under-21s head coach Travis Binnion has praised Leon and revealed what his next target will be.

He said (via BBC Sport): “It is evident for all to see he has some real qualities and some strong foundations to his game that he has to build on.

“He is aware, we are all aware, he has stuff to work on but to be fair to the kid, he has not played a full 90 minutes yet.

“We will be looking to tick that off pretty soon and that will be really good for him. If he can get a run of 90 minutes, then it is fair to look at his game and see where he is at.

“At this moment in time he has shown real glimpses of promise and has fitted in with the group really well.”

Diego Leon has immense potential

Leon is a modern full-back, unafraid to surge up and down the flank to support his team.

The teenager has enjoyed a fantastic few weeks at both club and international levels. He earned his first senior cap for Paraguay in a friendly clash against South Korea last month.

He scored an outrageous goal for the youth team in their 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago.

Leon picked up the ball deep inside United’s half, embarked on a dazzling solo run and skipped past six Spurs players before calmly slotting home.

The full-back embodies the fiery South American spirit that often defines players who thrive at Old Trafford.

With Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu currently ahead in the pecking order at left wing-back, Leon faces stiff competition but remains eager to make his mark.

He will now aim to impress the United coaches with consistent performances at the youth level and prove to manager Ruben Amorim that he is ready to challenge for a senior call-up sooner rather than later.
