Man Utd fancied to sign £35m UCL midfielder on loan in January
Manchester United could pursue a new midfielder when the transfer window reopens in January.
The Red Devils had a productive summer transfer window with five quality acquisitions.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko were signed to bolster the attack. Mbeumo and Sesko have been among the goals, while Cunha has impressed with his performances too.
Senne Lammens has already made a good impression in goal. He kept a clean sheet against Sunderland and looked assured in possession during the 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.
Diego Leon has yet to make his debut, but the left wing-back could have a bright future.
A new midfielder could be United’s next priority, and speaking to The United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs believes Conor Gallagher could reemerge as a target during the winter transfer window.
The Red Devils failed with a loan approach for the Englishman on deadline day last summer, but Jacobs feels United could return for his services if Atletico Madrid open the door for a temporary deal.
He added that Diego Simeone’s side could demand in excess of £35 million for a permanent transfer, and it is unclear whether United would be prepared to make such a big outlay in January.
He said: “If Athleti open the door to a loan formula for Conor Gallagher mid-season, I think that’s a deal Manchester United will do. If they’re to buy him, the price is in excess of £35m, and it remains to be seen whether Manchester United choose to spend that money in January.”
United could push for Gallagher loan deal
Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba was the Red Devils’ top target over the summer, but the Seagulls valued him at £115m. A deal never materialised in the end.
Seagulls manager Fabian Hurzeler has insisted that Baleba won’t be leaving until the end of the season. The South Coast outfit are a tough negotiating club and are expected to back the head coach.
Hence, a move for Baleba is unlikely this winter. The same could be said for Adam Wharton. Crystal Palace could wait until next summer to contemplate a big-money transfer.
United have also been linked with Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, but the German would need time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. A mid-season deal seems unlikely as a result.
Manager Ruben Amorim may ideally want a new midfielder with vast English top-flight experience in January. Gallagher would be a good acquisition for the club in that case.
Gallagher has found himself as a regular substitute under Simeone this campaign. The Englishman only came on in the second half against Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday.
He could be tempted to return to England this winter to boost his World Cup selection prospects.
United could be prepared to offer him the opportunity to do so. Gallagher would suit Amorim’s tactical system. He has a tireless work rate and likes to make regular forward runs.
He also possesses good recovery pace and does not shy away from making tackles.
The 25-year-old can operate as a defensive or central midfielder. United could seek to sign him on loan with an option to buy for £35m or more during next summer’s transfer window.
