'Nobody believes': Sky Sports pundit fires back at Man United man ahead of Liverpool showdown
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming the Manchester United co-owner made a major blunder with his recent public remarks.
Earlier this month, Ratcliffe publicly threw his weight behind under-fire United manager Ruben Amorim, vowing to give the Portuguese coach three years to turn things around at Old Trafford.
The 72-year-old admitted that Amorim has not had the best of seasons but is willing to give him “three years” to demonstrate that he is a great coach.
He also blamed the media for their knee-jerk reactions to the Old Trafford outfit.
However, Sky Sports pundit Carragher was not convinced, arguing that Ratcliffe’s comments may have done more harm than good.
He said: “I understand what he (Ratcliffe) is trying to do. He comes out to defend his manager, and he talks about three years. But he almost does not help him by saying that because nobody believes it.
“Nobody believes that Ruben Amorim will be the manager of Manchester United in three years.
“If he had said that ‘we have got no plans to change our coach for the next 12 months’, I would think okay, maybe they are looking to get to the end of the season.
“If the results keep going the way they are going, Amorim will lose his job, unfortunately. Even if Ratcliffe has come out to help him, I don’t think he has helped him in the end.”
INEOS identified the 40-year-old as their top target to replace Erik ten Hag in October 2024.
The billionaire is determined to back his man, but patience may be tested as the Portuguese tactician continues to struggle for consistency.
Amorim has endured a nightmare spell at Old Trafford, with many placing blame on his stubborn insistence on the 3-4-3 system.
His substitution choices have also drawn criticism, echoing the same issues that plagued Ten Hag’s final months in charge.
His side have already lost three Premier League games out of the seven played this term.
His lowest point came with a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, a result that sent shockwaves through the fanbase.
Amorim’s men now face a crucial showdown with Liverpool, a game that could once again shift the mood at Old Trafford.
United have not won back-to-back league games under the former Sporting Lisbon coach.
If that elusive consecutive win comes against their fiercest rivals, it might just buy Amorim the breathing room he desperately needs.
