Aston Villa ‘very confident’ as they gear up for Premier League visit to Tottenham Hotspur
Defender Ezri Konsa has spoken of Aston Villa’s confidence ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture away at Tottenham Hotspur.
Villa go into the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking for a first domestic away win of the 2025/26 season but on the back of four consecutive wins in all competitions.
Unai Emery and his players have gradually rebuilt their form after a poor start to the campaign but Konsa is one of a handful of players who’ve been pretty reliable all along.
The central defender was sent off in Villa’s opening Premier League game of the season but has been performing very well since he came back into the side after suspension.
He’s made himself a shoo-in for the England squad that goes to the World Cup next summer and is surely in the conversation to be one of Thomas Tuchel’s starting centre-backs in the United States, Canada and Mexico. If John Stones isn’t available, there probably isn’t even a conversation.
An away game at Spurs is a tough way to return to action after the October international match window but Konsa and Villa are up for the challenge. Nobody at Villa is going to be fooled by Spurs finishing 17th in the Premier League last season. They are, after all, in the process of a Champions League reset.
“Going into Sunday, we’re feeling very confident,” Konsa told the official club website.
“Unbeaten in our last four, the boys are looking forward to Sunday and hopefully we can go there and do what we need to do.
“[Spurs are a] really good team. They have been for a lot of seasons. Obviously last season they didn’t perform well in the Prem, but they ended up winning the Europa League.
“We know how tough it is, we know how good they’re performing at this moment in time, and we need to go there, focus on ourselves, and show everyone what we can do.”
Konsa is Villa’s model of consistency
Konsa has started every match for which he’s been available this season, playing the full 90 minutes in each apart from the Newcastle United match in which he was red carded in August.
Starting matches is what Konsa does. According to Aston Villa Statto, the defender will start in the Premier League for the 200th time if Emery selects him on Sunday, making him the first member of the current squad to hit that landmark.
The London-born 27-year-old joined newly promoted Villa from Brentford in July 2019 and has become a genuine stalwart who plays with an assuredness and composure befitting of the club’s most experience top-flight footballer.
