Jason Varitek Opens Up About Uncertain Future With Red Sox
While the Boston Red Sox are bringing back most of their coaching staff for 2026, one key member’s status is still up in the air.
Jason Varitek, the team’s game planning and run prevention specialist, just had his contract run out, making him a free agent. While he’s reportedly expected to return to the Red Sox, other teams could be looking to hire him for a managerial role or different leadership position.
On Wednesday morning, the former All-Star catcher joined “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI to discuss his future, revealing that he has a meeting scheduled with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow later today.
“Craig reached out this weekend for us to get together this week, and I think later today we’ll have a conversation,” Varitek said.
Now 53, Varitek has been with the Boston organization since 1997. After a 15-year playing career spent entirely with the Red Sox, Varitek has continued working for the team in various capacities since playing his final game in 2011.
“I mean, you have to see everything that goes on,” he added. “Have I been here for 28 years? Yes. Have I dumped everything I’ve had to make this organization better, and the people that you mentor, coach and be a part of? Yes. Do I want to continue to do that? Yes. But we’ll have to see where it all lies.”
Varitek said that he hopes to stay with Boston, but also acknowledged that he could be open to a managing job elsewhere if an opportunity arises.
“There are a lot of opportunities out there as far as managing roles. We’ll see if any of that transpires,” Varitek said. “But yeah, of course. I’ve grown here with my Red Sox blood, and I bleed red, but you’ll have to see what happens.”
