Bruins Get Great News On Waiver Wire Ahead Of Season

The Boston Bruins got the best-case scenario news after placing goalie Michael DiPietro on waivers.

The Bruins signed DiPietro to a two-year, $1.625 million deal to compete with Jones Korpisalo as the backup goalie. However, Korpisalo won the job, and Boston placed DiPietro on waivers.

Before Boston placed DiPietro on waivers, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman reported that teams were interested in him as a potential waiver claim.

“More goalies of note on waivers today: DiPietro (BOS), Daws (NJ), Stevenson (WASH) … they have all had interest,” Friedman wrote on X on Sunday.

Despite the interest, DiPietro surprisingly cleared waivers and was assigned to the American Hockey League. Boston also placed Matej Blumel, Alex Steeves, and Jonathan Aspirot on waivers, and all three also cleared.

DiPietro will serve as the starting goalie for Providence and give Boston some much-needed goalie insurance. He had a 26-8-5 record, a 2.05 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and four shutouts last season with Providence in the AHL.

As for the other three players, Blumel signed a one-year deal with the Bruins this offseason. He skated in seven games, recording one goal with the Dallas Stars last season.

Steeves signed a one-year deal with Boston after spending parts of four seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Aspirot is a 6-foot defenseman who signed with the Bruins this offseason and has yet to make his NHL debut.

All four players are expected to be key depth players for the Bruins and could be called up should any injuries happen.

Boston opens its 2025-26 NHL season on Wednesday on the road against the Washington Capitals.
