Why Man Utd want a new No.1 despite signing Lammens - Samuel Luckhurst

0 10

Manchester United are prioritising signing a new number 1 goalkeeper next year, according to the Sun journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

The Red Devils signed Belgian goalie Senne Lammens on summer transfer deadline day, but the former Chief United writer at the Manchester Evening News claims he is seen as one for the future.

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim stuck with Altay Bayindir in goal against Chelsea, and it remains to be seen when 23-year-old Lammens will make his Premier League debut.

He was not expected to play against Manchester City last weekend as making his Red Devils bow in the derby was not seen as ideal.

Lammens remains highly rated, but Man United are ready to sign another goalkeeper next year, with AC Milan star Mike Maignan on their radar.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and snapping him up for free would appeal to the Old Trafford club.

However, nothing is guaranteed right now and Lammens could still prove himself between now and the end of the season.

He will need to first pip Bayindir to the starting XI as the Turkey international will fancy his chances of holding on to his place for now.

While the 27-year-old has struggled at times and was at fault for goals against Arsenal and Burnley, he has made some impressive saves and has been solid with his service of the ball to the attackers.

Bayindir has not proven to be an upgrade on Andre Onana, who has joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan and is unexpected to return to the club.

Lammens will get his chance sooner or later, but whether he has what it takes to play in the Premier League and adapt to the pressure of lining up for one of the biggest clubs on the planet is unknown.

Man United have had goalkeeping issues since David de Gea started struggling under Erik ten Hag, and Lammens will hope he can be the answer to their woes in the position.
