Red Sox Star’s Historic Baserunning Streak Comes To Shocking End
It took opponents 148 games, but someone finally caught Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story trying to steal a base this year.
After stealing 31 bases without getting caught this season, Story was finally thrown out against the Athletics during the Red Sox’s 5-4 win on Wednesday night.
After swiping two bags on Tuesday, Story stole another one on Wednesday, stealing second after drilling a game-tying single in the bottom of the sixth. That made him a perfect 31-for-31 in stolen base attempts this year, setting the American League record for most consecutive stolen bases without getting caught.
However, that streak ended in the bottom of the eighth when A’s catcher Shea Langeliers did something no other catcher has accomplished this year, throwing out Story as he attempted to steal second base to end the inning.
With the game tied at 4-4, Story was trying to get in scoring position for Alex Bregman with two outs. He got a pretty good jump off A’s reliever Elvis Alvarado, but Langeliers made a quick, accurate one-hop throw to second baseman Zack Gelof. Gelof immediately slapped the tag down on the diving Story, ending his historic run.
Fortunately, the play didn’t end up costing Boston, which went on to win in 10 innings. Story still has 10 games remaining to try to start a new streak before the season ends, although his 31 steals are already a career-high (his previous best was 27). He’s been hot at the plate lately, too, with multiple hits in his last three games.
