Yankees Pitcher Continues Historic Dominance Over Red Sox In Hitless Start
The Boston Red Sox once again stumbled against a young New York Yankees pitcher who has their number.
Luis Gil threw six hitless innings in Friday’s 4-1 win over Boston at Fenway Park. The 27-year-old now has a 0.99 ERA in five career starts against the Red Sox.
That gives Gil the lowest ERA of any Yankees pitcher against the Red Sox in a minimum of five starts, according to Stathead’s Katie Sharp.
Four years ago, Gil held Boston scoreless over 4 2/3 innings in his third career start, a seven-inning doubleheader shutout. He stymied the Red Sox to four hits and one run in each of his two turns against Boston during last year’s American League Rookie of the Year campaign.
After missing the first four months of the 2025 season with a right lat strain, Gil contained the Red Sox to two runs (one earned) in a 6-3 loss on Aug. 21. Nate Eaton ended New York’s no-hit bid by hitting his first home run of the season in Friday’s seventh inning, but the Red Sox couldn’t generate any more offense against Devin Williams and David Bednar.
While the Red Sox can’t seem to score off Gil, they are reaching base. He’s issued 17 walks in 27 1/3 innings, including four on Friday. Pairing so many free passes with so few runs is a difficult formula to sustain.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone may nevertheless remember Gil’s success against Boston if the rivals meet in the postseason. The Red Sox will first try to bounce back on Saturday afternoon against Max Fried, who worked six scoreless innings in a 1-0 loss against them last month.
