Preview: Inter (A)

0 16

Hibs Women will participate in the first ever round of UEFA Women’s Europa Cup fixtures this week, taking on Internazionale Milano in the first qualifying round of the new competition!

The first leg tie will take place at the Youth Development Center, Milano, on Wednesday 10 September at 7pm (8pm CEST).

THE LOWDOWN

The Hibees are looking to bounce back from derby disappointment at the weekend with an improved performance against Inter.

Two second half goals saw Hibs lose out 2-0 in the Capital Cup to Hearts in front of almost 5,000 supporters – including over 700 Hibees in the away end.

Our rapid return to European competition comes following our thrilling 3-2 victory over Apollon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League second qualifying round play-off.

Kathleen McGovern’s hat-trick on the day secured passage into the qualifying rounds of the newly-formed Europa Cup, European women’s football’s new second tier tournament.

THE HOSTS

Inter were founded in 2018 but have rapidly risen to the top-level of Italian women’s football; competing for titles and now featuring on the continental stage.

La Nerazzure stormed to Serie B success, and promotion, in their maiden campaign back in 2018-19 – winning 21 games and drawing once during their unbeaten season.

Last season saw Inter claim their greatest league finish yet, placing second behind Serie A champions Juventus.

Gianpiero Piovani’s side took 51 points from a possible 78, finishing four points behind Juve in a competitive title race.

Entering the Champions League second qualifying round via the league path, Inter were defeated by Brann in the semi-final stage before defeating Icelandic outfit Valur to secure a spot in the Europa Cup first qualifying round.
