Patriots Lose Potential Emergency Option To Falcons

The New England Patriots are sticking with rookie kicker Andy Borregales.

It’s not like they have much of a choice…

Parker Romo, who spent training camp with the club and appeared to be an option should they look to bring in some competition for the rookie, signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

The Falcons brought in several kickers for a tryout — including Zane Gonzalez, Michael Badgley and Ben Sauls — and chose to add the veteran to their practice squad to compete with incumbent kicker Younghoe Koo.

Koo has been uncharacteristically shaky over the last couple of seasons, missing nine field goal attempts last season and starting off his latest campaign with another during a game-tying attempt.

Borregales was equally untrustworthy in his debut, finishing two-for-three on his attempts in Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Atlanta and New England seemed to be in a similar spot entering the second week of the season, as neither had much reason to trust the incumbent options at the position and could have benefitted from bringing in Romo.

The Falcons just got there quicker.

The Patriots will stick with their rookie for the time being, but if he continues to struggle with consistency, perhaps one of those previously stated names could become of interest around One Patriot Place.
