Murray On Deserved Win, Youngsters & McGovern

Following Hibs Women's UEFA Women's Champions League play-off victory over Apollon, Joelle Murray discussed her pride in the team's performance, in youngsters making landmarks appearances, and in Kathleen McGovern's hat-trick!

McGovern netted three times as the Hibees fought hard to secure a 3-2 over the Cypriot champions to ensure they continue their European adventures in the newly-formed UEFA Women's Europa Cup. 

"I was extremely impressed by the team," Murray told Hibs TV. "The way they managed the game at crucial moments, while playing in that intense temperature.

"I was very impressed they took on board all of the information we gave them prior to the game and I'm so happy that the group have got the rewards that they truly deserve.

"I'm absolutely delighted. We had people that were playing through a bit of pain, a bit of fatigue, but that's the beauty of this group, the togetherness. They fight right until the end and I think they showed that today.

"They were putting bodies on the line right up until the final whistle. It’s extremely pleasing to see and I think it's a test of character from the group."

The Hibees secured the win against stern opposition with a number of players struggling with niggles and getting to full fitness.

16-year-old NextGen Academy star Jessica Ramsay benefitted from the squad issues, making her first ever start in professional football in the European women's game's elite club competition. 

Alongside Jess, 15-year-old midfielder Isla Taylor was introduced as a late substitute for her Champions League debut. 

"I'm really proud. They were with the group a lot last season," Murray commented on the youngsters.

"They've obviously come away with us on this trip and Jess getting her first start for the club in such a prestigious competition on the back of an under-17s call-up. She must be delighted with herself.

"Also, Isla Taylor getting on the pitch for her first European competitive minutes. It's great that we were able to share the load, share the work rate and get the job done." 

Murray also commented on McGovern's memorable strikes, rebounding back following a tough match earlier in the week. 

"It was a test of McGovern's character. She was very disappointed on Wednesday evening with obviously some moments during that game and a massive test of character.

"She went out there today and proved her worth. I think the third goal epitomises her desire and determination to put her body on the line and get on the end of the ball.

"I'm delighted for her that she'll be up the road away back to Scotland with a match ball."
