Red Sox Place Wilyer Abreu On 10-Day Injured List

The Boston Red Sox made an unexpected roster move before Thursday’s series opener against the New York Yankees, promoting outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester.

With Garcia on the way to join the team in The Bronx, the Red Sox placed right fielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 18) with a right calf strain. Abreu last saw game action on August 17.

Abreu’s also went on the IL on June 9 due to a left oblique strain. The 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has hit .253 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs in 108 games this season, primarily as the team’s starting right fielder.

The absence of Abreu has given the Red Sox a chance to evaluate how Garcia’s bat and defense will play at the Major League level. The 22-year-old slugger was batting .289 with 20 home runs and 73 RBIs split between Double-A Portland and Worcester this season.

According to a social media post from The Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr, Garcia has arrived with the team in New York and will likely make his first start during Game Two of the series. Capable of playing all three outfield positions, Garcia made his debut at first base with the WooSox last week.
