Jarren Duran Shares Hilarious Story From Infamous Red Sox Plane Ride

One of the most unforgettable parts of the Boston Red Sox’s 2025 season happened not on a ballfield, but on a plane.

The Red Sox endured a famously rough plane ride from Boston to Minneapolis just before the MLB Trade Deadline. The flight was incredibly turbulent, necessitating an unscheduled pit stop in Detroit and giving several players motion sickness.

The unexpected hiccup (and an ill-time rain delay) briefly derailed Boston’s momentum, preceding a 5-4 walk-off loss in the series opener against the Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox quickly recovered, however, winning the next two games at Target Field to take the series and kick off a seven-game winning streak.

While that late-July plane ride to Minnesota was an unpleasant experience for many Boston players, at least one of them was able to make light of the situation according to Jarren Duran, who recently recounted the experience to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

Per Duran, relief pitcher Greg Weissert was joking throughout the ordeal, helping keep some of his teammates calm and in good spirits amid the chaos.

“He just kept talking about, ‘I love the grind. Keep giving it to me. When you think you’re done grinding, you’re still grinding.’ That kind of stuff is funny,” Duran told Healey. “People are dying, people are throwing up, people are running to the bathroom. He’s over there just absolutely loving every bit of the chaos.”

While there’s nothing fun about flying through turbulence, Duran believes it was a shared bonding experience that helped bring the team closer together during a pivotal point in the season. The Red Sox are 9-5 since the incident and have adopted a new celebration where they spread and sway their arms, mimicking a plane in turbulence.

“Little stories like that is what make teams really close,” Duran said. “Even though we were on a crazy plane ride, we have some stuff to laugh about.”
