Patriots Insider Names Two Ways Drake Maye Is Like Tom Brady
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye revealed in July that he’d been studying film of Tom Brady.
Now, according to Christopher Price of the Boston Globe, the second-year signal-caller has implemented some of what he’s learned.
Price posted on Bluesky on Thursday morning that there are two ways that Maye reminded him of the “GOAT” during Wednesday’s joint session with the Minnesota Vikings.
“One of the other things: we/I started to see some Bradyesque things from Maye, specifically when it came to pocket presence and awareness,” Price wrote. “He’s starting to realize the tips and tricks of how to be his own best OLman, much like we saw at times from Brady.”
The longtime Patriots reporter wasn’t done with his praise for Maye.
“No worries,” Price said, in response to a fan’s comment. “Look, it’s by no means perfect, and they’re going to get their lunch handed to them by some good teams out there. But things are starting to click specifically with Maye. He’s showing an occasional ability to rise above errors/issues and make something out of nothing.”
Price added that the North Carolina product’s awareness is drastically different from last season, where when “the pocket collapsed, he would have taken off and run like a scalded dog almost every time. Now, he’s hanging a tick longer, moving gradually, and seeing the field. It’s a process, but the signs are starting to show.”
The Boston Globe scribe’s back up ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky’s recent assessment of Maye.
The former journeyman quarterback included Maye in his top 10 rankings of NFL quarterbacks in terms of second-reaction ability on Monday. Orlovsky ranked Maye ninth in the league in that category, trailing the likes of Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Jayden Daniels.
