Report: Celtics Trade Georges Niang To Jazz For Undrafted Rookie

Georges Niang’s career with the Boston Celtics lasted all of one month.

The veteran power forward is reportedly being traded to the Utah Jazz, along with a pair of future draft picks, in exchange for undrafted rookie RJ Luis Jr.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

“The Boston Celtics are trading Georges Niang and two future second-round picks to the Utah Jazz for rookie RJ Luis Jr., sources tell ESPN,” Charania posted on X.

Niang was acquired by the Celtics in early July as part of a three-team trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks.

As noted by Celtics reporter Bobby Krivitsky, Boston’s deal with Utah has major financial ramifications.

“The Celtics just reduced their tax bill from $73.1M to $30.4M. They’re $10.2M below the 2nd apron & nearly under the first,” Krivitsky posted on Bluesky.

Luis spent one season with UMass before transferring to St. John’s ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The 22-year-old earned the Big East Player of the Year award last season after averaging 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists, helping lead the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed. Luis and the rest of his St. John teammates were upset by No. 10 Arkansas in the second round of the tournament.

Luis signed a two-way contract with the Jazz in early July.
