Dustin May Talks Red Sox Trade, Being ‘Pushed Out’ By Dodgers

Dustin May will make his debut with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the 27-year-old is slated to fill the team’s No. 5 spot in the starting rotation behind AL Cy Young award contender Garrett Crochet and the trio of Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito and former Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Walker Buehler.

It’s a much different situation than May was facing in Los Angeles, where May said he was “pushed out” ahead of last week’s traded to Boston.

“I was kind of pushed out,” the right-hander said, per Cotillo. “We had quite a few guys there in that organization. I couldn’t be more excited. It’s thrill to be here and be a part of it.”

The Dodgers activated two-time Cy Young award winner Blake Snell off the injured list on Saturday to rejoin a loaded rotation that already includes future Hall-of-Famer Clayton Kershaw, 2025 All-Star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, 2024 All-Star Tyler Glasnow and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. With the return of Snell, May would have been headed for the Los Angeles bullpen if he hadn’t been traded.

He was selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft and made his big-league debut in August 2019. May’s gone 6-7 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across a career-high 18 starts covering a career-high 104 innings this season.

“It was definitely a ride of emotions, up and down. Definitely sad leaving because I’ve been there for my whole career, but definitely very, very excited to be joining this organization and hope for a playoff push,” May said, according to Cotillo.
